This exhibit and party celebrates Ironton’s 15th year and the addition of Estudio Grande. The new building adds over 4500 square feet of studio space to the Ironton community and opens August 1st. Ironton remains unique to Denver with studios as diverse as metal fabrication, wood working, painting, stone sculpture, bronze casting and installation all sharing ¾ of an acre along with a garden and gallery. Denver artist HEIDI JUNG has been creating artwork for as long as she can remember. Her lifelong love of nature and insects has serves as her inspiration and subject matter for her work. Trained as a photographer, Jung brings her experience from the dark room to her work, which often resembles daguerreotypes. Jung maintains an active studio at Ironton Studios, where she works with charcoal, ink and vellum materials to create her pieces. Her solo exhibition at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, titled Black and White, opens on April 4th and closes on May 5th.

Jung's studio located at Ironton Studios Gallery (3636 Chestnut Street Denver CO 80216) will be open during the RiNo open studio Tour June 11th. Trek the wilds of RiNo during our 6th Annual Open Studio Tour. Explore over 100 artist habitats in the River North Art District. Hunt for that special work of art in an array of studio spaces and contemporary galleries featuring ceramics, sculpture, photography, painting, furniture, fiber, jewelry, metal and glass.
The event is FREE and features the best of RiNo.
Situated along the Platte River Bike Path, getting to and around RiNo is fun and easy. The arts district is located near Coors Field and LoDo. Cyclists can take exits on 31st St. and 38th Ave. to easily land in the heart of RiNo. By car, the district is easily accessible via I-70 or I-25 off of exits for Brighton Blvd. or Washington Street.

Women's Chamber of Commerce to exhibit Jung /
Heidi Jung has been invited to exhibit her work with the Women's Chamber of Commerce in an exhibition titled Garden Scapes. This exhibition opens on June 9th and will remain on display until September 1st. A reception will be held for the exhibition on Thursday, June 9th from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and benefit the Women's Chamber of Commerce.

About he home: 1625 was the first home built on Gilpin Street in Country Club over a century ago. Designed by Arthur Fisher of famed Fisher and Fisher Architects, this beautiful 1909 Tudor has been owned solely by the Cowperthwaite family since its original construction. The past century has seen an address change from its original 305 Gilpin Street, a sunroom and servant quarters’ addition and a handful of tasteful renovations. It remains in near-vintage condition and wonderfully, none of the remodels has significantly altered its character.

Except when they’re biting, stinging or otherwise annoying us, we spend most of our lives ignoring insects. But a closer look at our little exoskeletal fellow travelers can reveal not just utility, but beauty and deeper meaning. That’s the concept behind The Sacred Bug and the Insect, a group show at Hinterland Art Space featuring the work of Heidi Jung, Malea Ellison, Grant Williams, Gail Boyd, Norman Broomhall, David Zimmer, Robin Schaefer and Sabin Aell in mediums ranging from painting to installation and video. Aell conceived of the show when she realized that she and several colleagues were all working on pieces that explored the world of insects as it intersects with technology, nature, mysticism and dreams.
“People don’t usually pay too much attention to bugs, because they’re so small. They play a way larger role than we think. If you take just one little bug out of the food chain, it changes everything completely,” Aell explains. “They also play really important roles in religion and culture. If you look at bugs and how intricate they are, and how colorful and detailed, they’re like little artworks.”

Sellars Project Space is an elegant little gallery in the west side’s Berkeley neighborhood that was founded by artist and arts promoter Jimmy Sellars. His latest offering, Heidi Jung, is a self-titled solo dedicated to a Colorado artist whose work has been all over town lately, with examples at Ironton and the Center for Visual Art in addition to this show. Jung combines the influence of abstract-expressionism with an interest in botany in works done in ink and charcoal on vellum that’s been mounted on panels so they look like paintings.
“I’ve yet to put them in a stylistic category,” explains Jung. “They’re representational and they’re not; there’s a looseness to them. My idols are Motherwell and Dine. “The series I’m focusing on right now is based on images from a ’70s houseplant book. I’ve been working on the series for a while, and in the process, I’ve tried to become an expert on plants.”
Gallery director Sellars is enraptured by Jung’s work. “A lot of people believe that Heidi’s pieces are either complex renditions of nature or a discussion on the fading of beauty,” muses Sellars. “But I think the truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle. Personally, I see them as representing the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. Her pieces exude imperfection, impermanence and transience — in a nice way, of course — and while aesthetically, each piece offers its own form of beauty, they also radiate sadness and a longing for more.”
The show gets under way with an opening reception tonight from 6 to 9 p. m. at Sellars Project Space, 4383 Tennyson Street, 1D, and continues through August. Call 720-475-1182.
The Sacred Bug and the Insects at Hinterland /
Bugs and insects were always associated with the symbols of life, the big creator and shared great respect in a lot of cultures. According to one Egyptian myth, honey bees were the tears of the sun god Ra. It was the fly in egyptian mythology which gave protection agains disease or misfortune. The ancient egyptians also believed that the scarab beetle came into being itself from a ball of dung (the idea of self-creation). It was worshipped under the name of Khepri, which means 'he who has come into being' or 'he who came forth from the earth'. The god Khepri was associated with the creator-god Atum and was regarded as a form of the sun-god Ra. Just as the beetle pushed its ball of dung over the ground, so Khepri in the form of a scarab beetle, it was thought, rolled the solar disc across the sky each day.

MERGE: Metro State Alumni Exhibition 2010 – The Anniversary Year

MERGE was juried by Greg Watts, current Chair of the Metro State Department of Art and Barbara Houghton, Professor of Art at Northern Kentucky University and former Chair of the Metro State Department of Art. As the CVA celebrates its 20th Anniversary it is significant that these two jurors have joined forces. Barbara Houghton played a considerable role in the creation of the CVA 20 years ago and Greg Watts has helped develop the CVA into its role today as contributor to the Rocky Mountain art scene and most recently, as an important anchor for the Santa Fe arts district.
Highlighting some of the best talent to come out of the Metro State Art Department, MERGE features both emerging and well established artists, juried from a local and national basis.
Eligibility to participate in MERGE was open to artists who graduated from Metro State in 2009 or earlier. All work was completed within the last three years. Profiles of the artists will be posted to the CVA Facebook page every week for the duration of the exhibition.
